SFVSC Travel Teams

Our Travel Teams foster the physical and mental development that is necessary to excel at soccer in a healthy, character-building environment that encourages each child to achieve his or her highest potential.

Download the Parent Letter (last updated 2/03/09) and the Viking Coaches resumes to find out more about the Travel Program. All travel team parents must sign the parent pledge and turn it into the team manager.

PLAYING UP___________________________________________________

Q: Can my child "play up' and age group on the travel team?
A: It all depends on the kid- is he assertive enough that he will still take on bigger kids 1v1? Kids who start passing the ball all the time stunt their development as a player. As the level of competition increases, kids will fail more often until they learn how to make quicker decisions and cleaner technique. How does a child react to failure? Sometime the younger kids go into a shell.
Finally, a tie in ability at the tryout goes to the older player because that older player doesn't have another team to try out for, and the younger player can try out in his age group.
TRAVEL TEAMS AND UPPERHOUSE TEAMS

This fall 2009 the Viking club will offer both travel and UH (Upperhouse) teams in the U10, u11, and U12 age groups. What is the difference between travel and UH?

Travel teams play their league games split 5 home in SF and 5 away. The away games can be as far away as San Jose.
UH teams play their league games in SF with possibly one or two in Pacifica if there is a Pacifica team in that age group that wants to participate.

Travel teams participate in 2-4 tournaments a year, with usually at least one in August, one in September or October, one in January and one in the spring. The locations of these tournaments vary over Northern California, and can be viewed at www.cysanorth.org on the tournament calendar.

The UH teams will do one tournament and maybe 2 at the most.

Both teams play winter futsal with SF rec & Park.
Both teams play spring soccer.

The costs for the teams are relatively similar, $90-$100 per month, but the more tournaments a team does, the more it costs, since each tournament is about $400-$500 (about $30 per player).

Both teams will have a coach with a minimum of an E/D license and emphasize player development. However, the travel team is required to have tryouts every year and a player could be cut from the travel team. A player will not be cut from the Upperhouse team if the player makes a minimum of 75% of the practices and games, and is not disruptive to the group. If a player is in danger of being asked to leave the UH program because of failing to attend a minimum number of practices/games, or disruptive behavior, the parent will be given a written notice and an opportunity to correct the situation.
A player can stay on the Upperhouse team every year, and not have to tryout for the team each year. The travel team players are required to tryout every year, and at least five evaluators not associated with the team will assess the group at a series of formal tryouts. A player could be cut from the travel team, even if that player has never missed a practice or game, if in the consensus of the evaluators, there are 16 more talented players trying out that year.

Viking Club Tryout Policy (click to download in .pdf format)

The tryout will be posted on the Club webpage at least 3 weeks prior to the first date of tryouts.

The tryout will consist of at least 2 opportunities for prospective players to demonstrate playing ability.

Parents will be given a draft budget and commitment expectations at the first tryout.

The following principles apply to the tryouts:

Equal opportunity/no discrimination

Availability of financial aid

Tryout process

Evaluated by independent and/or Club coaches

Kids challenged in multiple situations (1v1, small sided games, etc)

Evaluation criteria

Individual skills (technique)

Team awareness (tactics)

Fit within team

Returning players

Do they have priority? Equal ability should go to the player who has already been on the team.

Coaches and team managers are also encouraged to provide any additional information to parents that may bear on a player's selection and/or interest in joining the team, such as:

minimum practice and game attendance expectations
how the team expects to deal with conflicts created by other sports or activities
likely practice frequency, times and locations
leagues in which the team will likely play
likely tournaments
number of players the team expects to carry on roster, subject to player interest and the coach's evaluation

 2)  The tryout will consist of at least 2 dates.  While attendance at both tryouts will not be mandatory unless stated clearly in the posted information before tryouts begin, coaches may consider attendance at both tryouts as a factor in the ultimate selection decisions.  Players MUST attend one of the tryout dates to be considered for the team.

 3)  At the first tryout, the parents in attendance will be given a draft team budget and, if not already provided in the posted information, the commitment expectations.  The budget and commitment information should thereafter be posted on the Club website along with the tryout information.

 4)  The decision to accept or reject the player is at the discretion and judgment of the head coach.  A variety of factors may be considered by the coach, including:

a player's ability, based on the tryout and information about past performances
a player's availability to attend practices, league play, and tournaments
a player's attitude
the team's need for players with specific competencies

5)  The selection decision will be made within two weeks of the last tryout date, and the roster must be posted to the Club website within that time.  The coach and team managers may also choose to notify the parents in writing or by phone.

6)  The selection decisions are final, and parents are not allowed to contact the coaches or team managers to contest the decision if his or her child is not selected.  If the parent believes that the selection decision was not made in conformity with this policy, they may submit a written protest to the attention of the Club president within one week of receiving the decision.

Qualifications

Players must demonstrate the commitment, positive attitude, good sportsmanship, spirit of cooperation and the physical abilities necessary to play competitive soccer. Our travel teams practice several times a week, play at least six months a year and compete in tournaments and games outside San Francisco. Monthly team fees are approximately $70 per month and financial assistance is available to families that qualify. No player will be denied a place on a team due to financial issues.

The foundation of our Travel Team Program is individual player development. We believe that having fun and developing as a player are inseparable and we promote a spirit of cooperation and competition. Our Travel Teams foster the physical and mental development that is necessary to excel at soccer in a healthy, character-building environment that encourages each child to achieve his or her highest potential.

Travel Team vs. Rec Soccer

How does Travel Team or competitive soccer differ from recreational soccer? Being part of a Travel Team requires a significantly greater commitment of time and dedication on the part of the players, family members, coaches and volunteers. Travel Teams practice several times a week, compete more than six months a year, and are often referred to as "traveling teams" as they play games and tournaments outside of San Francisco.

The San Francisco Vikings Soccer Club encourages boys and girls from throughout our community to participate in the Travel Team try-outs. Our goal is to provide a team for every child who has the commitment and physical ability to be a successful Travel Team player.

Team Fees
Monthly team fees for Travel Team players are approximately $70 per month for coaching/training fees. In addition, there are additional expenses, such as uniforms, balls, tournaments, etc. that these fees do not cover. While these fees are low in comparison to other clubs that we contacted, we realize that this may still be a financial hardship to some families. Financial assistance is available to families that qualify. There is a limited amount of scholarship funds available this year. These funds will be distributed to players based on need. The Club also needs volunteers to assist with various tasks during the year whether it is on the fields or in the office. Some of your fees can be defrayed by your participation in our volunteer program. Please don't hesitate to call SFVSC at 415.753.3111or email Libby Rappolt for more information.
